Welcome to our exciting website which celebrates children's creative reading in the UK and France. Schools from North and South Tyneside and Epinay-sur-Seine in Paris have come together to share their reading experiences with children's authors and illustrators Korky Paul and Rob Lewis. You will be able to have a look at what the schools have been up to during the author visits and to see the work that's been produced by the children before and after the visits. Have a good look around our website and please feel free to make a comment about what you see.

Elisabeth Brami was born in Warsaw in 1946 and grew up in France. After finishing her studies of Human Sciences, she became a psychologist. But in 1990, married and mother of three children, she decided to write books for children, publishing for Bordas. Some of her books have been translated in the United States, Germany and Japan.
Children adore her simple style, with simple words and simple plots which are always funny.
Gary lives near Newcastle Upon Tyne and has been telling stories & performing theatre in and around the North East for over 10 years. Gary was a fire-fighter with the MOD Fire Service before giving it all for a career in performing arts. He first encountered storytelling in the form of Taffy Thomas who was performing in a small village in Cumbria. Gary couldn't recall ever having had a story told to him and found it spellbinding. He now tells his stories to audiences of all ages in schools, museums, libraries and numerous other venues both indoors and out. His stories are often humorous and mainly traditional, coming from all around the world.
Korky Paul was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1951. He studied art at the
Durban School of Art in Natal, South Africa and then spent three years
working for an advertising agency in Cape Town. In 1976 as Korky puts
it he "fled for Europe" and got a job illustrating and designing
educational books in Greece. He then spent some time working for an
advertising agency in London and Los Angeles and then studied film
animation at Cal Arts in California.
Korky Paul is married with two children. He works in Oxford but spends the summer living it up in Greece.
Born in a respectable London suburb in July 1962, little did the world know what was to come... Even in the early days at school in Bath, dangerous creative tendencies were beginning to show. His English teacher had to mark stories that took up whole exercise books. Academic work promised Oxford University but parties and laziness resulted in only one ‘O’ Level in art! In 1990 he was finally taken away to the remote Welsh hills for therapy at an isolated seven acre smallholding... He became the pastor of a church for four years but now he leads a simple life gardening, playing music and mucking around on the computer. They even let him out from time to time to entertain children in schools and libraries.
Here at Gateshead City Learning Centre we're pleased to be involved in the project as technical partners. We're responsible for this, the project website and we'll be hosts for 2 whole day sessions with Star of the Sea, Headworthfield, Korky and Rob. They'll be visiting the CLC, working together with us and getting their hands on web radio, podcasting and chromakey tv technologies to create content for this site.
Tyne2Seine is closely linked to the annual Northern Children's Book Festival. 2008 is the 25th anniversary of The Northern Children's Book Festival. Each year seems to bring a bigger, better Festival and this year promises to be even more spectacular. This year there will be over thirty of the UK's leading authors, poets, illustrators and storytellers. They will lead sessions in libraries and schools across the North East, reaching up to 20,000 of the region's children.

Star of the Sea is a Roman Catholic Primary School in Whitley Bay, England. We are about 1 mile (1.5km) from the North Sea and 9 miles (14.5 km) from the City of Newcastle. Our school badge shows our local lighthouse which is called St. Mary’s Lighthouse. The school was opened in 1968 – it is our 40th birthday soon – and was made bigger in 2005/6. We have @ 400 pupils from 3 years up to 11 years.

There are 15 classes, with each teacher supporting our Headteacher – Mr Willcock. There are lots of other staff in school too. We have a whiteboard in every classroom, connected to a computer and the internet. Some of our older classrooms also have the old black and white boards. We love the school and our local area and are very proud of it.
Hedworthfield Primary School is a small primary school in a semi-rural location on the outskirts of Jarrow in South Tyneside. We have around 190 pupils in our main school and 24 children in our Speech and Language unit. We have 10 classes, and both morning and afternoon nursery classes. Our children are aged from 3 to 11 years old. At Hedworthfield we enjoy and achieve. We work hard during lesson time and have great fun at all of the after school clubs available. We are very proud of our school and hope you enjoy reading about the exciting project we are involved in.
